Full disclosure – I do contract work for Seal Bay Glamping Retreat. With that said, the West Coast has always been my spring getaway!
I have the privilege of being a resident of the Canadian Rockies. My heart is in the mountains, however this time of year, while we still have snowfall warnings, my soul needs a visit to the West Coast. I had never been to the Sunshine Coast prior to the end of November when I headed out to Seal Bay Glamping Retreat, met the exceptional team there, and found a new favourite coastal destination.
Powell River reminds me of my hometown, which was a mining town that evolved into a tourism hotspot. While there, I loved visiting the Farmer’s Market where one of the vendors jokingly asked if I had my Birkenstocks on. I replied, “it’s too cold right now – it’s hiking boot season!”
I was taken aback by the history of Powell River. From the Patricia Movie Theatre to Artique – Artists Cooperative, Powell River is simply my kind of town. Even though I was suffering with a bit of a knee injury, Nikki, the operations manager at Seal Bay Glamping Retreat and I did a walking tour of and a short hike along the shore through Willingdon Beach Park. Simple, relaxed, and natural are the three words that instantly come to mind.
My cottage at Seal Bay Glamping Retreat was nice and cozy. I can’t wait to head out again in a couple of weeks! This time, I will stay in one of the Spassels. A unique type of accommodation overlooking the Strait of Georgia.
An hour and 45 minute flight from Calgary to Comox and then a 90 minute ferry ride from Comox to Powell River, dinner in town and then a 30 minute drive out to Seal Bay Glamping Retreat where, even though I will be working, I know that the green grass, the fresh sea air and the smell of the forest in spring time will rejuvenate me. Spring is always my favourite time of year, and with another snowfall warning issued today for my hometown, I know it’s on its way, but I can’t wait! This Albertan needs a west coast visit!
