A Four-Night Camping Getaway in Powell River: Your Nature-Loving Getaway Guide

Just a short, scenic drive from Powell River, Seal Bay Glamping Retreat is perfectly positioned as a home base for those craving a few days of quiet adventure, fresh ocean air, and easy access to some of the most breathtaking natural landscapes on the upper Sunshine Coast.

Whether you're strolling through mossy forests, paddling calm lake waters, or catching the last golden light as it sinks behind the trees, this region offers a rhythm that encourages you to slow down, breathe deep, and truly take it all in.

This 3–4 day itinerary is designed to help you make the most of your stay—balancing outdoor activity with restorative moments of stillness. It’s the kind of getaway that reconnects you with nature, and maybe even yourself. Just the way we like it.


Day 1: Arrival and Inland Lake Exploration

  • Afternoon: Arrive in Powell River Terminal (Westview) via BC Ferries from Little River Ferry Terminal in Comox or Saltery Bay Ferry Terminal. Head to the Visitor Information Centre (4760 Joyce Avenue) to pick up maps and information on local trails and activities.

  • Late Afternoon: Set up camp at Seal Bay Glamping Retreat tenting area. Try a round of disc golf nearby at Craig Park Disc Golf Course.

  • Evening: Enjoy a campsite dinner or roast some smokies at one of the fire pits then relax on the beach to see the stars

Day 2: Coastal Hike and Town Exploration

  • Morning:  Drive to the Sunshine Coast Trail (various access points) near Inland Lake Provincial Park, and consider these options for a hike:
    • Manzanita Bluff: A popular section with stunning coastal views. Access points vary in difficulty. [3][5]
    • Sarah Point: The northern terminus of the trail (requires a longer drive).
    • Haywire Bay: Hike a portion of the trail from Haywire Bay Regional Park.
      * Choose a length that suits your fitness level.

  • Afternoon: Head into the town of Powell River to explore the historic Townsite, a National Historic District with unique architecture.
     
    Walking Tour: Take a self-guided walking tour of this National Historic District
    • Powell River Museum & Archives: Learn about the history of the town and the region's logging and pulp and paper industries.
    • Shopping & Dining: Browse the shops and enjoy lunch or a coffee at a local cafe.
  • Evening: Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant like the Shingle Mill Pub & Bistro in Powell River.

Day 3: Kayaking/SUP or Beach Day

  • Morning: Rent kayaks or paddleboards and explore Desolation Sound Marine Park. Several outfitters offer rentals and guided tours.

    • Kayaking: Rent kayaks from an outfitter in Powell River (Mitchell's Canoe, Kayak & SUP is one option) or Palli Palli Adventure Rentals, which offers delivery service. Explore the coastline, bays, and inlets. Okeover Inlet and Desolation Sound (for experienced kayakers) are popular destinations.

  • Afternoon: If kayaking isn't your thing, spend the afternoon relaxing on one of Powell River's beautiful beaches. Willingdon Beach is a popular choice with picnic areas and a playground. Willingdon Beach offers an easy walking trail through the forest with some unique finds from Powell River's past.  

  • Evening:  Relax and enjoy a campfire and smores on the beach or at one of the fire pits at Seal Bay Glamping Retreat

Day 4: Savary Island or Departure

Catch the ferry home or continue on with your BC adventure.  

  • Option 1: Savary Island (Requires Planning): Take a day trip to Savary Island, known for its white sandy beaches and warm waters. Drive to Lund, pick up fresh baked goods at Nancy’s Bakery before you take the water taxi to Savary Island. Reservations are essential. Vehicles are not allowed on Savary Island, so you'll be exploring on foot or by bike. Afternoon: Return to Lund by water taxi before departing by BC Ferries.
  • Option 2: Local Hike and Departure: Enjoy a final hike in the Powell River area. A good option is the hike up to Valentine Mountain for panoramic views. Pack up your campsite and catch the ferry home.

Important Considerations Before You Go:

  • Reservations: Book your ferry well in advance, especially if traveling during peak season. Also, reserve your campsite, especially at popular campgrounds like Inland Lake.
  • Weather: Powell River can have variable weather, even in summer. Pack layers, including rain gear.
  • Bugs: Mosquitoes and other biting insects can be prevalent, especially near water. Bring insect repellent.
  • Supplies: Stock up on groceries and camping supplies in Powell River, as options may be limited in smaller communities.
  • Cell Service: Cell service can be spotty in some areas. Download offline maps and inform someone of your itinerary.
  • Tla'amin Nation: Remember that you are a visitor on the traditional lands of the Tla'amin Nation. [2] Be respectful of the environment and local culture.
